THE BELTRAMI COUNTY JAIL HAS BEEN ORDERED TO REDUCE IT’S INMATE CAPACITY AFTER AN INVESTIGATION BY THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS SHOWED THAT MINIMUM STAFFING REQUIREMENTS WERE NOT MET ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE CAPACITY WILL GO TO 80 INMATES FROM 118, AND BED CAPACITY IS REDUCED T0 72 INMATES FROM 132 UNTIL MAY OF 2024. THE INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT DURING THE TIME PERIOD, 35 OF 53 SHIFTS WERE UNDERSTAFFED, AND ON OTHERS JAIL PERSONNEL WAS USED FOR MEDICAL TRANSPORTS WHICH THEN LED TO BEING SHORT STAFFED.
CONSERVATION OFFICER REPORTS FROM THE PAST WEEK SHOW TYPICAL VIOLATIONS FOR ICE FISHING AND SNOWMOBILE ENFORCEMENT. OFFICERS ALSO PARTICIPATED IN CAREER CONVERSATIONS AT WARROAD AND WARREN-ALVARDO-OSLO SCHOOLS. FISHING SUCCESS HAS BEEN SPOTTY, BUT ANGLERS ON UPPER RED LAKE ARE SEEING A GOOD AMOUNT OF SUCCESS FOR CRAPPIES.

BIDS WILL BE OPENING SOON FOR WORK THAT WILL BE DONE ON MARSHALL COUNTY CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, ALONG WITH VIKINGS ELEMENTARY. THAT WAS PART OF AN APPROVED VOTE BACK IN AUGUST. THE HIGH SCHOOL WILL BE RECEIVING FIVE NEW CLASSROOMS, A SECONDARY GYM AND WEIGHT ROOM, KITCHEN AND CAFETERIA. THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WILL BE ADDING A PARKING LOT, AND VIKING ELEMENTARY WILL BE EXPANDING OFFICE SPACE.
