UNIVERSITY of MINNESOTA EXTENSION HAS DONE A STUDY OF THE MOST VULNERABLE SEGMENTS OF THE STATE’S ECONOMY IN THE WAKE OF CORONAVIRUS. BRIGID TUCK IS A SENIOR ECONOMIC IMPACT ANALYST; SHE SAYS THE MOST VULNERABLE REGIONS ARE NORTHEAST MINNESOTA, WHICH IS HEAVILY DEPENDENT ON MINING AND TOURISM; AND FIVE OF THE SEVEN METRO COUNTIES. BUT SHE NOTES THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HAS BEEN FALLING IN MINNESOTA ROSEAU COUNTY’S MAJOR EMPLOYERS ARE FACING A LARGE LABOR SHORTAGE.
MINORITY GROUPS HAVE BEEN DISPROPORTIONATELY AFFECTED BY THE COVID PANDEMIC. A STUDY BY THE UNIVERSITY of MINNESOTA SAYS BLACK PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HOSPITALIZED DURING THE PANDEMIC AT MUCH HIGHER RATES THAN THEIR SHARE OF THE TOTAL POPULATION. THE STUDY SHOWS BLACK RESIDENTS IN MINNESOTA MAKE UP NEARLY TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT OF COVID HOSPITALIZATIONS; BUT THEY ACCOUNT FOR ONLY SEVEN PERCENT OF THE STATE’S POPULATION.
