One-hour DCHA webinar starts at 2 p.m. Central time on Sept. 15
NEW PRAGUE, Minn. — “New Research on Reproductive Management of Dairy Heifers” headlines the next Dairy Calf and Heifer Association (DCHA) webinar. Luís Mendonça, a member of Merck Animal Health’s ruminant technical services team, will lead the one-hour DCHA webinar that starts at 2 p.m. Central time on Sept. 15.
The American Association of Veterinary State Boards granted one Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) credit for this DCHA webinar. Thus, veterinarians may earn one CE credit.
In this RACE-approved webinar, Mendonça will highlight findings of recent research studies that focused on improving reproductive efficiency of dairy replacement heifers. Besides discussing the importance of achieving outstanding reproductive performance in dairy heifers, Mendonça will share how technology can be used to optimize fertility. Recent studies have shown that monitoring technologies can be used to improve efficiency beyond identifying heifers in estrus. Monitoring provides opportunities to further fine-tune reproductive performance by considering timing of artificial insemination (AI) when using sex-sorted semen and optimizing fertility when using prostaglandin to induce estrus. Furthermore, Mendonça will discuss the pros and cons of using heat detection or timed AI programs for first service in replacement heifers.
Trained as a veterinarian in Brazil, Mendonça specialized in bovine reproduction biotechnology. He conducted research as the University of California, Davis and then went to the University of Minnesota for his residency in dairy production medicine. Mendonça spent seven years at Kansas State University in a teaching and extension role. Earlier this year, he started working for Merck.
