TWO NORTHLAND RESIDENTS HAVE RECEIVED LONG PRISON SENTENCES AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO CHARGES INVOLVING THE SEXUAL ABUSE OF A MINOR AND PRODUCTION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY. MATTHEW JAMES GUNDERSON, 31, OF STURGEON LAKE, WAS ORDERED TO SERVE 30 YEARS, WHILE AMANDA MAY WALSH, 39, OF AITKIN, WAS SENTENCED TO 19 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON. COURT DOCUMENTS STATE THAT GUNDERSON ADMITTED TO ASSAULTING A PRETEEN GIRL AT A CARLTON COUNTY HOTEL IN EARLY 2019.

 

ABOUT 100 PEOPLE GATHERED AT A MINNEAPOLIS PARK BEFORE MARCHING TO DEMOCRATIC SEN. AMY KLOBUCHAR’S DOWNTOWN OFFICE TO PROMOTE SHUTTING DOWN RECONSTRUCTION AN AGING OIL PIPELINE IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA. THE HALF-HOUR PROGRAM AT GOLD MEDAL PARK THURSDAY AFTERNOON INCLUDED SINGING AND SPEECHES BY ACTIVISTS INSISTING THAT KLOBUCHAR STAND UP AND AT LEAST DELAY THE FINAL SEGMENT OF THE ENBRIDGE ENERGY LINE 3 PROJECT. THE SMALL GATHERING CAME ON THE HEELS OF THE LARGEST RESISTANCE YET TO THE PROJECT EARLIER IN THE WEEK, WHEN NEARLY 250 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED FOR SHUTTING DOWN A PUMP STATION.

 

A FEDERAL JUDGE HAS SENTENCED A MAN TO 15 MONTHS IN PRISON FOR KILLING AND BEHEADING A 700-POUND BLACK BEAR ON THE RED LAKE INDIAN RESERVATION IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA. U.S. DISTRICT JUDGE SUSAN RICHARD NELSON SENTENCED 39-YEAR-OLD JAMES STIMAC ON WEDNESDAY. PROSECUTORS SAY STIMAC USED A COMPOUND BOW TO KILL THE BEAR IN SEPTEMBER 2019. STIMAC, OF BRAINERD, MINNESOTA, ISN’T A TRIBAL MEMBER AND ENTERED THE RESERVATION WITHOUT PERMISSION.

 

THE ROSEAU FIRE DEPARTMENT HAS RESPONDED TO MORE THAN FORTY CALLS ALREADY IN 2021;  FIRE CHIEF CRAIG MCMILLIN SAYS HIS DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN “EXTREMELY BUSY”, AND THAT FIFTY TO SIXTY CALLS IN AN ENTIRE YEAR IS MORE COMMON.

THE ROSEAU CITY COUNCIL APPROVED NO INCREASE IN COST FOR TOWNSHIPS IN RURAL FIRE CONTRACTS FOR NEXT YEAR.

 

THE ROSEAU CITY COUNCIL WILL MEET IN JOINT SESSION WITH IT’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY NEXT WEEK TO CONSIDER ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR THE ELEVEN-01 APARTMENT PROJECT.  THE 37 UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING, TO BE LOCATED JUST OFF HIGHWAY 89 NEAR THE OAK CREST SUBDIVISION,  HAS A SHORTFALL OF BETWEEN SIX HUNDRED AND EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS.

 

THE ROSEAU CITY COUNCIL, THIS WEEK,  TALKED ABOUT THE POSSIBLE PURCHASE OF A HOUSE AT 303 CENTER STREET EAST.  THE CITY HAD OFFERED TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THE HOUSE IN 2019,  AND SAID THAT OFFER STILL STANDS.  THAT BUILDING IS THE ONLY HOUSE IN ROSEAU STILL IN THE HUNDRED YEAR FLOODPLAIN.

 

THIS IS TAKE A KID FISHING WEEKEND IN MINNESOTA, WHICH ALLOWS ADULT ANGLERS TO FISH WITHOUT A LICENSE AS LONG AS THEY HAVE A CHILD 15 OR YOUNGER FISHING WITH THEM . THAT SPANS TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY.

 

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MARK ROBINSON OF ROSEAU WILL BE HELD THIS MORNING (10:30 AM) AT SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH IN ROSEAU. MARK ROBINSON WAS 67.

 

NORTHBORN DAYS, A 3-DAY EVENT MAKING IT’S DEBUT, CONTINUES TODAY IN WARROAD WITH NORTHBORN GAMES AT 3:00 AND THE WARROAD SINGS COMPETITION THIS EVENING. TOMORROW’S MUSIC FESTIVAL BEGINS AT NOON.

 

THE FIRST THURSDAY EVENING CONCERT AT ROSEAU’S RIVERVIEW PARK GAZEBO IS NEXT WEEK, WITH SHAKE, RATTLE, AND ROLL. THOSE CONCERTS WILL BE HELD MOST THURSDAYS THROUGH THE SUMMER, BEGINNING AT 6:30.

 

AN OUTDOOR VENDOR SHOW WILL BE HELD ON THE LAWN OF THE ROSEAU AMERICAN LEGION TOMORROW FROM 11:00-3:00.
