REPRESENTATIVE MICHELLE FISHBACH HAS VOTED TO REPEAL TWO WHAT SHE CALLS “DANGEROUS” LAWS PASSED IN WASHINGTON DC. THOSE INCLUDE GIVING THE RIGHT TO VOTE IN LOCAL ELECTIONS TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND AN ACT THAT ELIMINATED MANDATORY MINIMUMS ON SOME VIOLENT CRIMES. SHE SAYS “THESE EFFORTS WON’T STAY IN WASHINGTON” AND THAT “THESE RADICAL IDEAS WILL CONTINUE TO SPREAD ACROSS THE COUNTRY.”

TOURISM LEADERS IN NORTH DAKOTA SAY THAT SINCE 2020, MOSTLY SINCE THE BEGINNING OF PANDEMIC ERA RESTRICTIONS, THE STATE LOST MORE THAN $344 MILLION IN REVENUE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BROUGHT BY CANADIAN TRAVELERS. THERE IS STILL A REQUIREMENT THAT NON-PERMANENT RESIDENTS COMING TO THE UNITED STATES BE FULLY VACCINATED, AND THAT IS STILL CAUSING SOME CANADIANS TO DECIDE TO STAY HOME.

WE CONTINUE TO HEAR THAT MANY COMMUNITIES SUFFER FROM CHILD CARE SHORTAGES, AND CROOKSTON IS A PRIME EXAMPLE. A 2022 STUDY SHOWS THAT THE CITY IS SHORT 82 CHILD CARE SPOTS. THEY NOTE THIS PUTS ANOTHER CHALLENGE ON EMPLOYERS, AND STRESS ON FAMILIES THAT EITHER NEED TO NOT WORK TO STAY HOME, OR UTILIZE EXTENDED FAMILY FOR HELP. THE CITY IS EYEING DEVELOPING THE WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LOCATION INTO A FUTURE CHILD CARE CENTER.

VOTERS ARE GOING TO THE POLL TODAY IN CROOKSTON, VOICING THEIR OPINION ON THE $4.9 MILLION REFERENDUM CENTERED ON AN ATHLETIC COMPLEX.

WINTER STORM IS IN THE FORECAST FOR TOMORROW AND WEDNESDAY, BUT IT SHOULD NARROWLY MISS OUR AREA. WHILE WE COULD SEE A TRACE OF FRESH SNOW MIXED WITH RAIN, AREAS CLOSER TO BAUDETTE ARE IN A BAND OF 2-5 INCHES, AND TOWARDS BEMIDJI AND I FALLS COULD BE SEEING SIX INCHES PLUS.

THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCED THAT YOU CAN NOW APPLY FOR THE ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM COMPLETELY ONLINE. PREVIOUSLY, YOU COULD ACCESS APPLICATIONS ONLINE, BUT THOSE WOULD NEED TO BE DELIVERED BY MAIL OR IN PERSON, SLOWING DOWN THE PROCESS. ADDITIONALLY, 40 PERCENT OF APPLICATIONS ARE SLOWED FURTHER WHEN APPLICANTS FOUND OUT THAT SOME SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS WERE MISSING. MORE THAN 114,000 MINNESOTANS HAVE APPLIED FOR HELP SINCE THE PROGRAM YEAR BEGAN IN OCTOBER, THAT’S A 5.5 PERCENT INCREASE OVER THIS TIME LAST YEAR.
