Memorial Services are pending for Cody Warne.
Cody was born on Dec. 10, 1987, to Mylan and Becky Losse in Roseau, Minn., joining older brother Brandon in a clan that eventually grew to seven (and a half) over the years. A little over a year later, the duo was joined by a sister, Kati, and ultimately Taylor, Tanner, Kali, and DyAnna. Through marriage, step-brother Connor also joined the fold later on.
When Cody was four, he was adopted into the Warne family by Scott and was welcomed by another family that treated him as their own. This again happened when Gary Grondahl joined the family by marrying his mom in 1996.
Cody was a normal little boy until a terrible day in 1994 when the car he was riding in was struck by another car, costing his father Scott his life and relegating then 6-year-old Cody to a wheelchair and ventilator for the remaining 30 years of his life. Cody spent many months at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, where he met many people and maintained many relationships and friendships over the years — including his surrogate family, the O’Briens. Dan, Ann and especially the kids Ryan, Quinn and Bridget all held a special place in Cody’s heart.
But while Cody’s physical abilities were taken away, his cognitive ones remained. He continued to be a fierce fan of his Minnesota sports teams (and that one from Green Bay, too), professional wrestling, country music, and for a time, Taylor Swift — “before she stopped doing country.”
He never really forgave her for that.
Cody was a fixture at Target Field, the Target Center, the Xcel Energy Center, the grandstands at the State Fair, and many other venues for concerts, shows, sporting events and even to spoil the youngsters at things like Sesame Street Live. His primary caregiver, Jessica Hansen-Sigala, always chaperoned him, and his neighbor Jeff and Jess’ sons Dylon and Devon often joined him.
Cody had countless incredible people on his medical team over the years, but none as long or as dedicated as Jess — whom he affectionately referred to as “Boss” — who was there for many of the close calls with his health over the years.
And many of those there were. There were many sleepless nights wondering if he’d pull through — and he always seemed to. And in God’s infinite mercy and grace, he spared Cody any of that when he brought him home.
Cody graduated from Roseau High School in 2006, and shortly thereafter moved into a group home in St. Paul before finally residing at his apartment at 619 Lafayette for the last few years of his life.
Cody’s heart of gold beat for the final time on Saturday night, May 18, 2024, as he passed from a world of pills, tubes and doctors into one where he is free from all of that and joined by so many people he loved.
And oh, did he love. Cody loved fiercely — especially nieces and nephews, grandparents and pets — even despite the difficult hand he was dealt in life.
Cody is survived by his parents Gary and Becky Grondahl of Roseau, Mylan and Carole Losse of Donaldson, Minn.; grandparents Jean Shirley of Roseau, Russell and Pauline Warne of Bushnell, Fla., Lois Losse of Thief River Falls; siblings Brandon (Mandi), Connor (Marcela), Kati (Mike Kiemele), Taylor, Tanner (Kelsey Shaw), Kali (Kory) and DyAnna; nieces and nephews Harper and Curtis Jon Warne; Greta Haats; Gabriel and Mia Snitker; and Baby Girl Kiemele, whom Cody was so eager — perhaps even impatient — to meet.
He was also survived by aunts/uncles Ryan Shirley of Thief River Falls, Chad (Carmen) Warne of Valley City, N.D., Jennifer (Lance) Bachand of Warroad, Gary Warne of Roseau, Franklyn (Cheri) Losse of Salol, Randell (Toni) Losse of Wasola, Mo., Georgia (Dan) Drown of Salol, Melanie (Jim) Gast of Fargo; along with countless cousins and other relatives who may not have been by blood but were family all the same.
Cody was preceded in death by father Scott Warne; grandparents Curt and Diane Shirley, Roy Losse; great-grandparents Frances Evert and Clara Kveen; uncles Rodney Shirley and Vernon Losse and of course, special friend Ryan O’Brien.
Cody’s family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, caregivers and staff who provided care and support for him over the years. We’ve had the privilege of meeting so many amazing, kind and caring individuals over the years — all of whom helped give us an extra 30 years with Cody that otherwise might not have been possible after his initial injury.
