A Memorial service for Donald L. Kofstad of Roseau, MN will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 11:00AM at the Roseau Evangelical Covenant Church. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services. Interment will take place at Spruce Cemetery in Roseau, MN.

Donald Luverne Kofstad was born April 9, 1936 in Grand Forks, North Dakota to Nels and Sophie (Vistad) Kofstad. Donnie grew up with two sisters, Marlet and Jean. He lived in the Roseau and Warroad area his entire life, attending school in Warroad.

On September 19, 1959 he married Elna Kronberg and started Kofstad Signs where he worked until the age of 75. His son Tim worked with him for several years. Sons Rob and Scott became business partners carrying on the family tradition. Donnie was a gifted lettering artist, being taught by his father Nels, and worked a large area of northern Minnesota. He lettered trucks, sold signs, and worked a lot in the early days of Polaris and Arctic Cat lettering race sleds, helmets, and trailers.

Donnie had many hobbies, but his favorite was hunting White Tail Deer in the woods. He hunted with his rifle, bow and arrow, muzzleloader, and pistol. He taught many young men the skill of bow hunting and target shooting. He was well known for his interesting stories of encounters with bears, wolves, and of course his “Big Buck” stories. Donald was committed to his Christian faith and served as chairman of the Evangelical Covenant Church for 29 years. He also served on the Bluewater Covenant Bible Camp board for several years. He and his wife Elna loved summer trips to the mountains of Montana and trips to Branson, Missouri to listen to music. Donnie was also a self taught carpenter, electrician, and plumber. He and his sons built numerous cabins in the Lake of the Woods area. Donnie was proud that his boys grew into their own faith, were amazing dads to their kids and had successful businesses. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought great joy and fun to his life and he was their greatest supporter. He was so grateful for their help making it possible to keep hunting when he needed assistance. Donnie enjoyed watching sports, especially Hockey, and could be found drinking coffee and visiting with anyone!

He is survived by his wife, Elna, sons, Robert (Shelly), and Scott (Kelly), daughter-in-law Janell, grand children Jordan (Breanna), Sarah (Zach Johnson), Josh, Brandon (Taylor), Katelyn and Logan, great grandchildren Ali, Ben, Charlie, and Lauren Kofstad and Clara and Thor Johnson, brother-in-law Jerry and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Timothy, his parents, and his sisters.

Special thanks to the Warroad Care Center staff who took such great care of Donnie!
