CHAD STANFORD OF PLUMMER HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ABUSE OF A CHILD, THAT SPANNED FROM 2021 TO EARLIER THIS YEAR. THE CHILD WAS 9 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF THE FIRST OCCURRANCE. LAW ENFORCEMENT FIRST LEARNED OF THE ABUSE AFTER HE SOUGHT A REFERRAL TO A PSYCHOLOGIST BECAUSE OF SEXUAL CONTACT A CHILD MADE WITH HIM WHILE HE WAS ASLEEP. AFTER HE WAS ARRESTED, THE TOLD POLICE HE KNEW IT WAS WRONG, BUT FIGURED IF HE LET THE SEXUAL CONTACT CONTINUE, THEN THE CHILD WOULD NOT DO IT WITH ANYONE ELSE. THERE IS A MAXIMUM SENTENCE FOR HIS CHARGES OF 25 YEARS.

FOUR PEOPLE FROM BLACKDUCK DIED IN THE FIVE-VEHICLE CRASH MENTIONED IN YESTERDAY’S NEWS THAT OCCURRED NEAR FLOODWOOD. A 65 YEAR OLD MAN, 66 YEAR OLD WOMAN, AND ALSO TWO 9 YEAR OLD GIRLS WERE KILLED.

A RAILWAY BRIDGE IN ONTARIO, JUST NORTH OF THE MINNESOTA BORDER, COLLAPSED YESTERDAY, BLOCKING RAIL AND BOAT TRAFFIC. LOCATED A FEW MILES NORTHEAST OF FORT FRANCES, IT CROSSES A CHANNEL OF RAINY LAKE. THE BRIDGE IS A STYLE THAT IS CAPABLE OF LIFTING TO ALLOW LARGER BOATS TO TRAVEL UNDERNEATH. THE COLLAPSE DID NOT HAPPEN WHILE A TRAIN WAS CROSSING.

THE FEDERAL JUDGE HAS DISMISSED A LAWSUIT THAT ATTEMPTED TO TIGHTEN THE REGULATIONS ON THE FARMED DEER INDUSTRY. PLAINTIFFS ARGUED THAT THOSE REGULATIONS WERE PUT IN PLACE TO TRY AND STOP THAT INDUSTRY FROM THRIVING OR GROWING, BUT THE JUDGE MAINTAINED THAT THE REGULATIONS ARE MEANT TO HELP FIGHT CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE, AND ANY HARM TO THE INDUSTRY IS INCIDENTAL.

SOME AREA ROAD RESURFACING PROJECTS WILL BEGIN MONDAY. THERE WILL BE WORK DONE ON HIGHWAY 11 IN KARLSTAD, HIGHWAY 172 FROM BAUDETTE TO WHEELER’S POINT, HIGHWAY 59 FROM KARLSTAD TO LAKE BRONSON, AND HIGHWAY 175 FROM THE DAKOTA BORDER TO HIGHWAY 75. THERE WILL SOME LANE CLOSURES AND FLAGGERS TO DIRECT TRAFFIC.

As parents begin back-to-school shopping, Governor Tim Walz today highlighted two tax relief programs that can help Minnesota families afford back-to-school expenses. Families with children in kindergarten through 12th grade may be eligible to lower their taxes or get a larger refund with the K-12 Education Subtraction and Credit.
The K-12 Education Subtraction allows families to reduce their tax by subtracting up to $1625 in education expenses for each child in kindergarten through 6th grade, and up to $2500 for each child in 7th through 12th grade.

A Celebration of Life for Lonnie Hagen will take place on Sunday, August 18, 2024 at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau at 12:30 pm with a visitation an hour prior. Interment will take place at Badger City Cemetery.
