AUTHORITIES RESPONDED AN EXPLOSION IN AN OUTBUILDING ON THE SHORES OF LAKE OF THE WOODS EARLY THIS MORNING. THE VICTIM, ICE GUIDE CJ DAVIS WITH LAKE OF THE WOODS SLEEPERS, SUFFERED BURNS TO HIS HANDS AND FACE AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO REGIONS HOSPITAL BURN UNIT, AND THEY ONLY MENTIONED AS NON-LIFE THREATENING. THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED AS HE ENTERED THE SMALL CABIN.

LIFECARE MEDICAL CENTER IN ROSEAU IS LOOKING TO KEEP THEIR PATIENTS AND RESIDENTS SAFE AS WE CONTNIUE THROUGH FLU SEASON. YESTERDAY THEY ANNOUNCED THAT THEY ARE RESTRICTING VISITORS TO TWO AT A TIME TO SEE SOMEONE AT THE HOSPITAL OR IN THEIR MANORS OR ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES. THEY ENCOURAGE ANYONE WHO IS ILL, TO BE PATIENT, STAY HOME, AND COME BY WHEN HEALTHY.

GROUPS ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO EXPAND ELK POPULATIONS IN MINNESOTA INTO THE NORTHEAST REGION. THE MINNESOTA DNR AND FOND DU LAC BAND IS RESTORING ELK POPULATIONS ON THE RESERVATION AND THE SURROUNDING PORTIONS OF THE 1854 CEDED TERRITORY. THEY ARE CURRENTLY TAKING PUBLIC INPUT FOR THAT PLAN, AND LATER THIS FALL THEY WILL HAVE A DRAFT OF THAT AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC COMMENT BEFORE BEING FINALIZED.

IT WAS A GOOD JOBS MONTH IN DECEMBER IN MINNESOTA AS THEY ADDED 4100 JOBS, DROPPING UNEMPLOYMENT BY TWO-TENTHS OF A POINT TO 3.3%.

FISHING REPORT FROM LAKE OF THE WOODS TOURISM AS WE HEAD INTO THE WEEKEND SAYS THAT FISHING REMAINS STRONG ON LAKE OF THE WOODS, AND IT’S BEEN A GREAT WINTER FOR JUMBO PERCH. MOST GOOD FISHING AT THIS POINT IS BETWEEN 26-32 FEET OF WATER. WITH ICE HAVING FORMED THE WAY IT HAS, THEY EXPECT AN ICE FISHING SEASON THAT CAN LAST THROUGH MARCH.

THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE HAVE ADDED BLACKHAWK HELICOPTER TO IT’S OPERATIONS TO HELP WITH BORDER SECURITY AND CUT DOWN ON PEOPLE SNEAKING ACROSS THE BORDER AND HUMAN SMUGGLING EFFORTS. IT LAUNCHED ON SUNDAY NEAR THE PEMBINA CROSSING. IT WILL REMAIN STATIONED ON THE CANADIAN SIDE OF THE BORDER, THEY DID HIGHLIGHT THEIR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE US BORDER PATROL.

DEER HUNTERS IN NORTHWEST MINNESOTA HAD A GOOD YEAR. NUMBERS ARE SHOWING AN OVER ALL 8% INCREASE IN THE HARVEST. STATEWIDE THE HARVEST WAS ROUGHLY 170,000 DEER, UP 7%. THE ARCHERY SEASON PLAYED A ROLE IN THAT NUMBER BEING HIGHER, AS THAT WAS UP 16% STATEWIDE.

CURRENT AND FORMER NORTHLAND COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE ATHLETES WILL GATHER THIS SATURDAY FOR AN EVENT TO COMMEMORATE 50 YEARS OF WOMEN’S ATHLETICS AT THE COLLEGE. THEY HAVE A WOMEN’S-MEN’S BASKETBALL DOUBLE HEADER THAT BEGINS AT 1:00, WITH ALUMNI HONORED AT HALFTIME OF EACH GAME. THERE WILL BE OTHER SOCIAL GATHERINGS AND EVENTS HELD THROUGH THE DAY.

THE GRYGLA-GATZKE FOOD SHELF IS HAVING A CHANGE IN HOUR ON SATURDAY. THEY WILL BE OPEN THIS WEEK FROM 7:30-10:00.

A Memorial Service for Mark M. Emery of Greenbush, MN will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 10:00AM at United Free Lutheran Church in Greenbush, MN. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025 from 5-7PM with a prayer service at 7PM at United Free Lutheran Church in Greenbush, MN. Interment will take place at Bethel Cemetery.
Mark passed away at the age of 44.

A Memorial Service for Erling S. Olson of Roseau, MN will be held on Monday, January 27, 2025 at 11:00am at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau, MN. Interment will take place at a later date.
Erling Olson passed away at the age of 82.
