The Grand Forks Herald reported earlier this week that Minnesota District 1 lawmakers are gearing up for the Minnesota legislative session starting January 14, with priorities on agricultural policy and rural water projects. With tight margins in the Legislature, including a potential tie in the House, budget negotiations are expected to dominate discussions. Newly elected Rep. Steve Gander of East Grand Forks joins Rep. John Burkel and Sen. Mark Johnson in pushing for substantive policy, permit reforms, and infrastructure investments. Johnson emphasized the importance of passing cost-effective policies, especially after last session’s failure to pass a bonding bill. Gander, adjusting to his new role, highlighted challenges facing family farms and regulatory burdens. All three lawmakers will serve on key committees to address these pressing issues.
Winter in Minnesota poses survival challenges for birds, as noted by the University of Minnesota Extension. With natural food sources like seeds and insects scarce, backyard feeders become essential, offering nutrition to species such as chickadees and woodpeckers. High-fat foods, including black oil sunflower seeds, suet, and peanuts, help birds stay warm and healthy. The university advises placing feeders in sheltered locations and keeping them clean to prevent harm. For more tips on supporting wildlife, visit extension.umn.edu.
