EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING, LAW ENFORCEMENT TAPED OFF A LARGE AREA AROUND THE POLK COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER IN CROOKSTON. CROOKSTON POLICE AND MINNESOTA STATE PATROL TROOPERS WERE SEEN MONITORING THE AREA. AN UPDATE IN THE DAY CAME TO SHOW THAT A MAN HAD BEEN FATALLY SHOT BY CROOKSTON POLICE AFTER THEY CAME UPON HIM BRANDISHING A HATCHET. HE AGGRESSIVELY APPROACHED THE OFFICERS WHO FIRST DEPLOYED LESS LETHAL METHODS, BUT HE CONTINUED TO APPROACH, AND THEN WAS SHOT.

THE WILDLIFE DRIVE AT THE ROSEAU RIVER WMA WILL BE OPEN TO VEHICLE ACCESS MAY 18-19. THE MAIN ACCESS IS LOCATED 1 3/4 MILES SOUTH OF THE MANAGEMENT OFFICE ON ROSEAU COUNTY ROAD 3. ONLY VEHICLES THAT ARE LICENSES FOR HIGHWAY USE ARE ALLOWED ON THAT ROAD. WEATHER COULD STILL CAUSE A CHANGE IN PLANS. THE ROAD WOULD STILL PLANNED TO BE OPEN AT IT’S USUAL TIME LATER IN THE SUMMER.

COLLEGE LEADERS ARE ASKING MINNESOTANS TO GET THEIR FAFSA SUBMITTED FOR FINANCIAL AID FOR SCHOOL. AS OF MAY 3, ONLY 33% OF MINNESOTA HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS HAD COMPLETED APPLICATIONS, DOWN NEARLY 16% FROM THE SAME TIME LAST YEAR. NOTORIOUSLY LONG AND COMPLICATED, THE FAFSA CHANGED THIS YEAR THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO MAKE THE PROCESS EASIER, BUT IT WAS PLAGUED BY TECHNICAL ISSUED, A DELAYED RELEASE, AND THEY MISSED AN ADJUSTMENT FOR INFLATION.

THE NORTHLAND RANGE AND GUN CLUB IS HOSTING AN ANNUAL HAMBURGER FRY ON MAY 21, WITH THE PUBLIC WELCOME. THE INVITE INTERESTED SHOOTERS TO JOIN THEIR TRAP SHOOT LEAGUE, THAT IS HELD TUESDAYS BEGINNING MAY 28.

A funeral service for Laurie Hart will take place on May 20, 2024 at Rose Free Lutheran Church in Roseau at 2:00 pm with a visitation an hour prior. Interment will take place at Moe-Rose Cemetery.

A memorial service for Rex Welin will be held Tuesday, May 28th, 2024 at 10:00 am at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau with a visitation an hour prior. Internment will take place at Spruce Cemetery following the memorial service.

A memorial service for Nickolas Streiff of Warroad will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church in Warroad at 2:00 pm with a visitation an hour prior. Nick was 25.

THIEF RIVER FALLS WILL BE NEGOTIATING WITH OAK VIEW GROUP 360 TO MANAGE FOUR VENUES IN THE CITY, INCLUDING RALPH ENGELSTAD ARENA. THAT GROUP CURRENTLY MANAGES THE ALERUS CENTER IN GRAND FORKS. THE CITY COUNCIL ANNOUNCED IN DECEMBER THAT IT WOULD LOOK TO TERMINATE THEIR CONTRRACT WITH VENUWORKS. IN 2023, THE FOUR FACILITIES UNDER VENUWORKS MANAGEMENT OPERATED AT A LOSS OF OVER $500,000.
