The Lake of the Woods Soil and Water Conservation District is sponsoring a Low-Cost Well Water Testing Clinic for local residents. The cost during this clinic is $15 per sample for the first 100 participants. Tests will be run for the three most common drinking water contaminants: e. coli, total coliform bacteria, and nitrates. Arsenic testing has been added this year, and will be available as a separate test for $15.
Wells must be sampled on Friday, August 23rd and dropped off the same day at locations in Baudette and Williams. To get your sample kit for bacteria and nitrates or arsenic, stop by the SWCD office in Baudette between 8:00-4:30, Monday through Friday any time before the 23rd.

Authorities are investigating the death of a man in Thief River Falls. The call came on Friday afternoon from the Cenex Travel Plaza for a report of an employee that passed out. The staff started CPR and the ambulance crew took over when they arrived, but 31-year old Jon David O’Keefe, of Warren, died on the scene.

Budget cuts have been a theme for school districts, with the story of students fundraising in Thief River Falls to save classrooms has made headlines. A fundraiser by the Boosters for Grygla-Goodridge-Gatze Sports will be held Friday, August 23 at the Community Center. They’ll serve taco-in-a-bag, have live music with a beer garden, meat raffles, along with live and silent auctions. That district made the decision to cut a number of athletic programs due to budget restraints.

There is a primary vote tomorrow where there is a decision to be made to narrow choices in a Kittson County Board race, incumbent Michelle Fishbach faces a challenge from Steve Boyd in US House Race-Distrcit 7, and some school referendum questions are on ballots.

The Marshall County Central School has had a summer construction project and now has an August 28 ribbon cutting ceremony planned for the location in Newfolden. The community event will take place in the new school gymnasium. There is also a smaller event planned at the Viking Elementary School earlier in the day.

A Funeral Service for Loraine Otto will take place on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau at 2:00 pm with a visitation an hour prior. A visitation will also be held the night prior at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau from 5:00 – 7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Interment will be held at Falun Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life for Lonnie Hagen will take place on Sunday, August 18, 2024 at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau at 12:30 pm with a visitation an hour prior. Interment will take place at Badger City Cemetery.
