EARLIER THIS MONTH, A SPELLING BEE WAS HELD AT THE ROSEAU SCHOOL FOR THOSE IN THE 5TH-8TH GRADES, WITH FOUR PARTICIPANTS PER GRADE. WHEN IT WAS ALL OVER WITH, DELAYNNA MORTVEDT WAS CROWNED CHAMPION WITH WYLIE MARSEN RUNNER-UP. THOSE TWO WILL CONTINUE TO ADVANCE TO ADDITIONAL COMPETITIONS.

THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD HAS ADOPTED THE 2024 HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN, DEMONSTRATION A COMMITMENT TO REDUCING RISKS FROM NATURAL DISASTERS. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT CO-DIRECTOR RICH GROSS HIGHLIGHTED THE IMPORTANCE OF PROACTIVE STRATEGIES FOR COMMUNITY SAFETY.
THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD ALSO APPROVED A PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE THE COUNTY’S WEBSITE TO ENHANCE ACCESSIBILITY AND USABILITY. THE $2,900 PROJECT, MANAGED BY REVIVE LLC, WILL INTRODUCE FEATURES LIKE MOBILE COMPATIBILITY AND IMPROVED CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT TOOLS.
THE GRAND FORKS HERALD RECENTLY SHARED THE STORY OF SAM GRANDSTAND, GARY KUJAVA, AND GREG KUZNIA WHO ALL SUFFERED VARIOUS LEVELS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING WHILE THEY WORKED ON A TRACTOR IN ONE THE MAN’S SHOPS NEAR STRANDQUIST. A FAULTY HEATER PROVED TO BE THE CULPRIT. AFTER FEELING JUST LIGHTHEADED, THINGS ESCALATED QUICKLY. EVENTUALLY GRANDSTAND AND KUJAVA WERE TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE AND EVENTUALLY AIRLIFTED TO HENNEPIN MEDICAL CENTER FOR OXYGEN THERAPY. KUZNIA, EVENTUALLY SOUGHT TREATMENT AT SANFORD MEDICAL CENTER IN THIEF RIVER FALLS. ALL THREE ARE RECOVERING AND DOING BETTER.
THE NORTHWEST MINNESOTA FOUNDATION WILL BEGIN TAKING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS FEBRUARY 1. THE AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE A WIDE RANGE. LAST YEAR, THEY AWARDED 262 SCHOLARSHIPS THAT RANGED FROM $500-$4000.
A WOMAN ACCUSED OF SWINDLING THE RED LAKE COUNTY CO-OP OUT OF $570,000 IS BEGIN HELD ON $5 MILLION BOND. STEPHANIE MICHELLE NIPP OF MONTANA ALLEGEDLY MISREPRESENTED HERSELF AS AN AFFILIATE WITH A COMPANY THAT THE CO-OP WAS PAYING FOR A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT. SHE USED EMAIL TO REQUEST PAYMENT ON AN INVOICE THAT WAS ACCURATE, BUT THE PAYMENT DETAILS PUT THE MONEY INTO AN ACCOUNT SHE HAD OPENED. THERE IS A POSSIBLE 20 YEAR PRISON SENTENCE.
A Memorial Service for Erling S. Olson of Roseau, MN will be held on Monday, January 27, 2025 at 11:00am at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau, MN. Interment will take place at a later date.
Erling Olson passed away at the age of 82.
