Polar Air masses moved into Minnesota from Canada last week bringing bone chilling cold throughout the region with high temperatures only today going above since Thursday last week.  According to the national weather office in Grand forks, expect temperatures to be more seasonal by this coming Wednesday, and we see mid teens and even some temperatures in the twenties.  Of course with the more moderate temperatures expect to see an increase in chances of snow accumulations.

The Grand Forks Herald, this weekend, reported that Refugee resettlement in North Dakota is expanding beyond metro areas like Fargo, Grand Forks, and Bismarck, with rural communities stepping in to address population decline and workforce shortages. Cynthia Shabb of the Global Friends Coalition notes growing interest in rural resettlement, but emphasizes their focus remains in Grand Forks for effective support. State data shows shifts in resettlement patterns, with Fargo now hosting 53%, Grand Forks and Bismarck at 16% each, and 15% in rural areas like Dickinson, Williston, and Carrington. Holly Triska-Dally, state refugee coordinator, highlights local sponsorship programs driving this growth. Organizations like CATCH, led by Derrick Gross, are working to create welcoming environments, linking refugees with local employers and fostering community connections. The Welcome Corps program is also gaining traction, pairing refugees with job opportunities to help rebuild North Dakota’s rural workforce.

Last night Roseau Residents were invited to attend the Three Kings Day Eve presentation and celebration at the ROZO City Center.  That event was organized by our community residents who moved here from Puerto Rico, Mexico and other Spanish speaking communities. Attendees were treated to delicious homemade desserts, kids crafts, music, story telling and engaging conversations.

Visionary leader, Jim Thunder, of Buffalo Point Manitoba has passed away.   Jim first became chief of Buffalo Point First Nation in 1969, and continued through 1997 when he passed the role to his son John.  Jim was instrumental in the development of the modern day Buffalo Point including the world class marina, golf course, cottage development, and event center.  Jim passed away peacefully New Years eve at the age of 94 at his home in Buffalo Point Manitoba.

The University of Minnesota Extension is launching a statewide series of workshops to help farmers and agritourism enthusiasts turn ideas into successful businesses. The workshops, running from January through February, will teach participants how to develop effective business plans using AgPlan, an online tool with tips and examples. Susanne Hinrichs, an Extension educator, emphasizes that “sustained business success doesn’t come from chance,” highlighting the importance of planning. THERE IS A KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FREE THROW CONTEST TODAY IN THE ROSEAU ELEMENTARY GYM. THAT IS FOR BOYS AND GIRLS AGED 9 TO 14. IT’S FREE AND NO PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. THAT REGISTRATION WILL BEGIN AT 3:15.

The City of Warroad city council meets in regular session Monday January 8th at 4:30pm and the   City of Roseau officials will also be having their first city council meeting tonight at 5 p.m. in their council chambers.

 

Funeral services for Ronald E. Larson of ROSEAU are this morning at 11 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church in Roseau.  Helgeson funeral homes has charge of arrangements.

A Funeral Service for Lorraine F. Hueper will be held tomorrow, Tuesday January  7 at 11 a.m at Pitt Community Church in Pitt, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.  Helgeson funeral homes has charge of arrangements.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date for James (Jim) Thunder of Buffalo Point Manitoba. Jim died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Tuesday, December 31st at the age of 94.  Birchwood funeral Home of Steinbach Manitoba has charge of arrangements.

A graveside service for Robert Paul Hamlin Jr of Warroad, MN, will be held at Noon on Tuesday, January 7 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls. Due to inclement weather, the service will take place indoors at the funeral home. Robert Hamlin JR was 52.  Johnson Funeral Home of Thief River Falls has charge of arrangements.

A Funeral Service for Beverly J. Storey of Warroad, MN will be held on Wednesday, January 8  at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Warroad, MN. Visitation will be held tomorrow evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Helgeson Funeral Home in Warroad, MN. Interment will take place at America Cemetery. Bev passed away at the age of 92. Helgeson funeral homes has charge of arrangements.

A Funeral Service for Tyler L. Carr of Warroad will be held on Friday, January 10 at 1 p.m.  at Zion Lutheran Church in Warroad. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Helgeson Funeral Home in Warroad.   Helgeson funeral homes has charge of arrangements.
