THE MINNESOTA NURSES ASSOCIATION HAS VOTED IN FAVOR A SECOND STRIKE, THAT NOW GIVES LEADERSHIP THE POWER TO GIVE A 10-DAY NOTICE BEFORE A STRIKE COULD ACTUALLY OCCUR. THEY DID NOT RELEASE INFORMATION ON HOW IMMINENT THAT COULD BE. THE OVER 15,000 NURSES AFFECTED ARE IN THE TWIN CITIES, DULUTH, SUPERIOR, AND TWO HARBORS WOULD BE AFFECTED. TWO HOSPITALS IN DULUTH ALREADY HAD BARGAINING SESSIONS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY, AND EARLIER THIS WEEK, NURSES IN MOOSE LAKE HAD REACHED A TENTATIVE AGREEMENT.
HEATING BILLS WILL BE HIGHER IN MINNESOTA THIS WINTER, AND ENERGY ASSISTANCE FUNDS ARE DOWN FROM A YEAR AGO. RIGHT NOW THE AVERAGE HEATING ASSISTANCE GRANT IS $580, COMPARED TO AN AVERAGE OF $1199 LAST YEAR. THAT IS DUE MOSTLY TO THE FACT THAT THE AGENCY HAD AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN DOLLARS THAT NEARLY DOUBLED THEIR FUNDING. THEY EXPECT NEARLY 125,000 APPLICATIONS FOR THAT PROGRAM.
THE ASSOCIATION AND A DECISION ON WHETHER OR NOT TO MOVE MINNESOTA’S PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY IN 2024 TO AN EARLIER DATE COULD BE MADE AS EARLY AS THIS WEEK. THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE IS MEETING TOMORROW TO DECIDE WHICH STATES IT WILL CHOOSE TO HOLD THE EARLY ELECTORAL CONTESTS THAT OFTEN SHAPE WHICH CANDIDATE A PARTY IS LEANING TOWARDS. AS IT STANDS, MINNESOTA’S PRIMARY WILL BE MARCH 5, 2024, BUT THIS COULD MOVE IT UP TO JANUARY OR FEBRUARY WITH STATES SUCH AS IOWA AND NEW HAMPSHIRE.
TODAY, GOVERNOR TIM WALZ WILL BE HOLDING A ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION WHERE HE WILL ANNOUNCE FUNDING THAT WILL EXPAND ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE IN THE STATE AND ALSO DISCUSS INNOVATIVE WAYS THE STATE COULD BE ADDRESSING THE ONGOING CHILDCARE SHORTAGE IN MINNESOTA.
A TRUCK DRIVER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AFTER HIS TRUCK WAS HIT BY A TRAIN ON TUESDAY, SOUTH OF WINGER ON HIGHWAY 59. THE DRIVER WAS 58-YEAR OLD GERALD ROBBINS OF CIRCLE PINES. A REPORT FROM THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAID THE TRUCK STOPPED TOO CLOSE TO THE TRACKS, LEADING TO THE COLLISION.
A GOODHUE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY IS ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE WITH PAY AFTER HE SHOT A MAN LAST WEEK. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, 24-YEAR OLD FERNANDO JAVIER CARBAJAL CHASED THE DEPUTY, LEADING THE STEVE SUTTON-BROWN TO SHOOT HIM. CARBAJAL WAS UNARMED AT THE TIME. AN INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING.
