THE VETERANS HONOR FLIGHT OF NORTH DAKOTA AND MINNESOTA ANNOUNCED A DATE FOR A FLIGHT THIS SPRING THAT WILL BRING VETERANS TO WASHINGTON DC FOR A MULTIPLE DAY TOUR OF THE CITY AND MONUMENTS THAT ARE BUILT IN THEIR NAME HONOR. THE FLIGHT LEAVES OUT OF FARGO ON SUNDAY, APRIL 30 AND RETURNS THAT TUESDAY. THERE IS ROOM FOR APPROXIMATELY 90 VETERANS OF WORLD WAR II, THE KOREAN AND VIETNAM WARS. ANY VETERAN THAT SERVED BEFORE MAY 7, 1975 CAN APPLY.
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA RESEARCHER DAVE GRAFSTROM HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED WITH AN HONORARY PREMIER SEED GROWER AWARD FROM THE MINNESOTA CROP IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION. HE’S A KEY MEMBER OF THE TEAM ADDRESSING CROP PRODUCTION ISSUES AT MAGNUSSON RESEARCH FARM NEAR ROSEAU. THAT AWARD HAS BEEN GIVEN ANNUALLY SINCE 1930.
SOME AG GROUPS ARE PLEASED WITH GOVERNOR WALZ’S BUDGET PROPOSAL WHICH WOULD INCLUDE OVER $100 MILLION TO SUPPORT FARMERS TO GROW THEIR BUSINESSES WHILE EXPANDING THE STATE’S BIOFUELS INFRASTRUCTURE AND BUILDING SOIL HEALTH. BOTH THE MINNESOTA SOYBEAN GROWERS ASSOCIATION AND MINNESOTA CORN GROWERS ASSOCIATION MET WITH WALZ DURING AN AG EXPO IN MANKATO.
FLOOD MITIGATION WORK IS UNDERWAY THAT WILL HELP TO REMOVE A PORTION OF THE CITY OF NEWFODLEN FROM A 100-YEAR FLOODPLAIN. IN 2016, FEMA CHANGED MAPPING THAT THEN INCLUDED 43 RESIDENCES, MULTIPLE ELEVATORS, A CHURCH AND PARK AND AN APARTMENT BUILDING. IN 2021, FLOOD INSURANCE BECAME MANDATORY FOR ALL THOSE PROPERTIES. THE WORK WILL INVOLVE REPLACING CULVERTS AND INSTALLING A BRIDGE OVER TEH MIDDLE RIVER.
A RECENT STUDY SHOWS THAT NORTHLAND COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE OFFERS A BIG IMPACT TO THE REGIONAL ECONOMY IN NORTHWEST MINNESOTA. THE STUDY FOUND THAT CAMPUSES IN EAST GRAND FORKS AND THIEF RIVER FALLS CONTRIBUTED $127 MILLION AND CREATED 953 JOBS LAST FISCAL YEAR. THEY ALSO FIGURED THE COLLEGE GENERATES $10.4 MILLION IN TAX REVENUES FOR STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS.
