THE CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT HELD A PUBLIC MEETING TO OFFER INFORMATION ON AN AUGUST REFERENDUM, LOOKING FOR FUNDS TO BUILD A NEW ATHLETIC COMPLEX. CURRENTLY THE SCHOOL LEASES FACILITIES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA-CROOKSTON FOR SOME SPORTS INCLUDING TRACK AND FOOTBALL. THE UNIVERSITY NO LONGER HAS TEAMS IN THOSE SPORTS, AND THEREFORE THOSE FACILITIES HAVE BEGUN TO DETERIORATE, AND REPAIRS ARE NOT A HIGH PRIORITY FOR THE UNIVERSITY. IN TOTAL, THE BOND IS ESTIMATED AT $3.91 MILLION. ONE PERSON IN ATTENDANCE SAID THEY LIKE THE IDEA OF THE SCHOOL HAVING SOMETHING THAT BELONGS TO THEM, WHILE ANOTHER QUESTIONED THE TIMING OF IT ALL WITH INFLATION AND THE COST OF GOODS.
A 53-YEAR OLD CANADIAN MAN WHO WAS BIKING FROM WINNIPEG TO HOT SPRINGS ARKANSAS AS A WAY TO RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENESS FOR HIS GRANDDAUGHTER’S MEDICAL CONDITION WAS KILLED AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A VEHICLE ON INTERSTATE 29 LAST WEEK IN SOUTH DAKOTA. HE HAD BEEN BIKING ABOUT 62 MILES PER DAY SINCE JUNE 4. SO FAR, HE HAD TAKEN IN PLEDGES TOTALING NEARLY $18,000 CANADIAN DOLLARS.
TWO HORSES WERE RESCUES FROM FLOODED TRAILS IN THREE ISLAND COUNTY PARK IN TURTLE RIVER, NORTHEAST OF BEMIDJI. TWO RIDERS WERE ON HORSEBACK WHEN THE TRAILS BECOME TO WET AND SOFT THAT HORSES BEGAN TO SINK. THEY BECAME SPOOKED AND RAN INTO EVEN DEEPER WATER AND MUD. AUTHORITIES WERE ABLE TO CREATE A PATH USING PLYWOOD FOR THE HORSES TO WALK BACK TO SAFETY.

St. Paul Public Schools officials are drafting a new policy to allow and encourage the Native American practice of smudging at schools and events in Minnesota’s second-largest district. Smudging is the cultural practice of burning sage or other sacred herbs for healing and to cleanse the soul of negative thoughts. Smudging is already taking place on an informal bases at some St. Paul schools, but supporters want to develop an official policy.
President Joe Biden has nominated one of the prosecutors who helped convict a former Minneapolis police officer of murder in the killing of George Floyd to be a federal judge in Minnesota. Jerry Blackwell is a Minneapolis attorney and a founding partner of the law firm Blackwell Burke. He worked pro bono as he helped prosecute Derek Chauvin for the May 2020 killing Floyd
