AFTER LENGTHY DISCUSSION, THE ROSEAU CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT APPROVED A MINNESOTA D.N.R. OUTDOOR RECREATION GRANT APPLICATION ON BEHALF OF THE ROSEAU RIVER WATERSHED DISTRICT, FOR THE ROSEAU RIVER WATER TRAIL. THERE IS A FIFTY PERCENT MATCH FOR THE SIXTY-SIX THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT, WHICH WOULD BE SHARED OVER TWO YEARS BY THE CITY AND THE WATERSHED DISTRICT. THE GRANT MONEY WOULD BE USED FOR A KAYAK AND CANOE LAUNCH NEAR BETWEEN THE CENTER STREET AND HIGHWAY ELEVEN BRIDGES. THE COUNCIL APPROVED THE GRANT APPLICATION CONTINGENT ON AN ENGINEER’S FAVORABLE STUDY OF THE RIVERBANK’S SOIL STABILITY.
AS THE MINNESOTA RIVER RISES IN SOUTHWESTERN MINNESOTA, MORE ROADS ARE CLOSING IN THE MONTEVIDEO AND GRANITE FALLS AREAS. RENVILLE HAS CLOSED TEN COUNTY ROADS, AND CHIPPEWA COUNTY HAS CLOSED SEVERAL. IN YELLOW MEDICINE COUNTY, PORTIONS OF SEVENTY DIFFERENT ROADS WERE CLOSED THIS WEEK.
MINNESOTA EXPORTS GREW TEN PERCENT BETWEEN 2017 AND 2018, TO A RECORD HIGH TWENTY-THREE BILLION DOLLARS. THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SAYS MINNESOTA BUSINESSES EXPORTED MORE THAN A THOUSAND PRODUCTS TO MORE THAN TWO HUNDRED COUNTRIES. THE THREE LARGEST EXPORT MARKETS WERE CANADA, CHINA AND MEXICO. VEHICLES, INCLUDING POLARIS PRODUCTS, ACCOUNTED FOR ONE-POINT-FOUR BILLION DOLLARS OF THE TOTAL EXPORTS.
TAX DAY IS JUST OVER TWO WEEKS AWAY. THE WEBSITE WalletHub HAS RELEASED IT’S ANALYSIS OF THE STATES WITH THE BEST AND WORST TAXPAYER RETURN ON INVESTMENT.USING METRICS COMPARING THE QUALITY AND EFFICIENCY OF STATE GOVERNMENT SERVICES IN FIVE CATEGORIES, WalletHub SAYS NEW HAMPSHIRE, SOUTH DAKOTA AND FLORIDA HAD THE BEST RETURN ON INVESTMENT. MINNESOTA WAS 36TH ON THE LIST; NORTH DAKOTA 44TH; AND HAWAII LAST.
A NEW YORK FINANCIAL TECHNOLOGY COMPANY CALLED SmartAsset RANKS ROSEAU AMONG THE COUNTIES IN MINNESOTA WITH THE LOWEST DEBT TO INCOME RATIO. ROSEAU COUNTY WAS 7TH LOWEST IN THE STATE, WITH A 0.86 PERCENTAGE OF DEBT TO INCOME. KOOCHICHING COUNTY WAS 5TH LOWEST; THE THREE BEST IN MINNESOTA WERE REDWOOD, RENVILLE AND LYON COUNTIES. ROSEAU’S POVERTY RATE OF SEVEN-POINT-EIGHT PERCENT WAS THE LOWEST OF THE TEN COUNTIES ON THE LIST.

A ROSEAU SCHOOL DISTRICT TASK FORCE CONTINUES WORK ON A PROPOSAL FOR A RENOVATION OR BUILDING PROJECT AT THE OLDEST PORTIONS OF THE ROSEAU HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING. FORMER SCHOOL BOARD CHAIR STU McFARLANE IS A MEMBER OF THAT TASK FORCE …. IT’S EXPECTED THAT TASK FORCE WILL MAKE A PRESENTATION TO THE SCHOOL BOARD IN JUNE.
MINNESOTA AUTHORS DENNIS AND KAREN VINAR WILL TALK ABOUT THEIR BOOK “HOW DID YOU FIND ME AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?” THIS AFTERNOON (4 PM) AT THE ROSEAU PUBLIC LIBRARY.
THE ROSEAU COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS IT’S 92ND ANNUAL MEETING APRIL 12TH AT THE ROSEAU CITY CENTER, WITH A MUSICAL PERFORMANCE BY “THE LOST FORTY”.
