20 YEAR OLD VALENTIN MENDOZA IS NOW CHARGED WITH TWO WOUND OF SECOND DEGREE MURDER AND TWO COUNTS OF THIRD DEGREE MURDER, RELATING TO A JUNE CRASH IN EAST GRAND FORKS THAT KILLED A 17 AND 16 YEAR OLD BOYS. HE WAS ORIGINALLY CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR HOMICIDE. POLICE SAY HE WAS GOING 75 MPH IN A 45 MPH ZONE WHEN HE INTENTIONALLY SWERVED TO CAUSE THE HEAD ONE COLLISION, IN AN ATTEMPT TO TAKE HIS OWN LIFE.

A Florida man arrested for human smuggling after the bodies of four people were found near the Canada and U.S. border during a blizzard has been released from jail without having to pay bond. Steve Shand is charged with transport or attempted transport of illegal immigrants, after the four bodies were discovered in Canada and seven Indian nationals were found in the U.S. He is not charged in the deaths. Federal Magistrate Judge Hildy Bowbeer of Minnesota didn’t order bond Monday, but said Shand must obey several release conditions. Shand had to surrender his passport. He is only allowed to travel to Florida and Minnesota, where court proceedings will take place.

Authorities say a furnace was the source of carbon monoxide that last month killed seven members of an immigrant family from Honduras living in Minnesota. Police in Moorhead have said blood samples from the victims showed a lethal level of carbon monoxide, but further testing was needed to determine whether the source was the furnace or a van parked in an attached garage.

Several businesses, trade groups and social organizations formed the Minnesotans Against Marijuana Legalization on Monday as the measure’s supporters signal another push for the issue ahead of the start of the legislative session next week. The coalition fears the potential for more drivers under the influence and a lack of roadside tests for marijuana for law enforcement would make roadways less safe.
