A WARROAD MAN ACCUSED OF SCATTERING NAILS ON AREA ROADS AND CAUSING DAMAGE TO PEOPLE’S VEHICLES HAS BEEN SENTENCED, AFTER PLEADING TO A LESSER CHARGE. TRAVIS THOMPSON WAS INITIALLY CHARGED WITH A FELONY, BUT PLEADED GUILTY TO A 4TH DEGREE MISDEMEANOR OF DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. POLICE SAY THEY HAD BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE THAT CASE OUT FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, AS THE NAILS HAD BEEN PLACED AT LEAST SEVEN SEPARATE TIMES FROM JANUARY 2023 TO APRIL 2024.
THE MINNESOTA DNR HAS CONFIRMED CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE IN TWO NEW PERMIT AREAS. ADULT BUCKS TESTED POSITIVE IN DPA 266 NEAR HAWLEY AND ANOTHER IN DPA 701 NEAR GREENFIELD IN HENNEPIN COUNTY.
REPRESENTATIVE JOHN BURKEL OF BADGER MADE COMMENTS VOICING HIS DISPLEASURE WITH THE HOLDUP IN THE MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE. HE NOTED THAT ONE PROGRAM HE BELIEVES IN IS BEING HELD UP. THE NEWLY FORMED FRAUD PREVENTION AND STATE AGENCY OVERSIGHT COMMITTE WAS SET TO BEGIN HOLDING HEARINGS INTO MASSIVE FRAUD ISSUES THAT MINNESOTA HAS ENDURED THE PAST FEW YEARS. HE WENT ON TO SAY “PREVENTING THE THEFT OF TAX DOLLARS IS NOT A PARTISAN ISSUE. MINNESOTANS ARE TIRED OF PEOPLE SCAMMING THE SYSTEM AND ARE DEMANDING ANSWERS.”
ONE VIOLATION THAT STOOD OUT IN DNR CONSERVATION OFFICER REPORTS FOR THE WEEK CAME WITH OFFICER CODY FONTES OUT OF WARROAD WHERE A LARGE GROUP OF ANGLERS WERE CITED FOR BEING OVER LIMIT. THEY WERE IN POSSESSION OF 150% OF THEIR LIMIT OF WALLEYE AND SAUGER. OFFICERS REPORT A WIDE RANGE OF SUCCESS IN FISHING, WITH ANGLERS BEING FRUSTRATED IN SOME AREAS, AND SEEING PLENTY OF SUCCESS IN OTHERS.

The Roseau County Board approved agreements for two grants: the Reaching Rural Grant and the Community Wildfire Defense Grant. These initiatives will support grant management services and wildfire prevention programs, with consultant Susan Grafstrom overseeing both efforts. The wildfire program focuses on creating a Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
Roseau County is now accepting proposals for housing projects under the state-funded Housing Grant Program. Applications, available on the county website, must be submitted by March 7. The initiative supports workforce housing development and aims to address local housing shortages.
A MAN FROM CLIMAX, MINNESOTA WAS KILLED IN A WEEKEND CRASH WHEN HIS VEHICLE COLLIDED WITH A SEMI. THAT OCCURRED ON HIGHWAY 75 NEAR HALSTAD. 68-YEAR OLD REYMUNDO ZENTENO WAS KILLED. THE DRIVER OF THE SEMI, 26 YEAR OLD LUIS PARDO OF MEXICO, WAS UNINJURED.
U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) reintroduced their bipartisan legislation to lower child care costs and address the nationwide shortage of affordable child care. The Child Care Workforce and Facilities Act would provide competitive grants for states to train child care workers and build or renovate child care facilities. The bill has a number of co-sponsors and there is companion legislation in The House.
