The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has released its latest long-term employment projections for 2022 to 2032. While the state as a whole is expected to see a 4.6% increase in jobs—adding nearly 145,000 positions—Northwest Minnesota is projected to grow at a slightly slower pace of 3.9%, translating to just over 10,000 new jobs over the next decade. In Northwest Minnesota, some of the fastest-growing industries include professional services, healthcare support, and transportation and warehousing. High demand is expected for roles such as heavy truck drivers, construction laborers, and stockers. On the other hand, industries like retail trade are projected to see slower growth, reflecting the rise of e-commerce and automation.
It’s not just about creating new jobs. With many workers retiring or transitioning to other careers, employers will need to fill over 300,000 total openings in the region during this period. That means opportunities are abundant, even in sectors with minimal job creation. While Northwest Minnesota’s job growth may lag behind regions like Central Minnesota and the Twin Cities, the demand for skilled workers remains high. Investments in education and training programs—especially in fields like healthcare and technology—will be critical to support the evolving workforce.
