The Grand Forks Herald is reporting that the area concluded 2023 with an intense ice storm that brought power outages and road closures, marking the year’s end with severe winter conditions. The National Weather Service attributed the year's weather patterns to a transition from La Niña to El Niño, resulting in below-average precipitation and above-average temperatures. The shift led to a varied climate, with a surplus of snowfall in the winter, drier and warmer summer conditions, and a recent ice storm on Christmas Day. Despite last winter’s significant snowfall, this year’s precipitation is notably below normal, indicating a change in weather patterns influenced by the tropical phenomena. The forecast suggests a continuation of warmer temperatures but with a decrease in the severity of El Niño during spring and early summer.
