A MIDDLE RIVER MAN HAS PLEADED NOT GUILTY TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE CHARGES. CALVIN JOHN RYBAKOWSKI FACES UP TO 40 YEARS IN PRISON FOR FELONY FIRST-DEGREE CRIMINAL SEXUAL CONDUCT FOR THE ALLEGED ABUSE OF A YOUNG GIRL THAT TOOK PLACE OVER THE COURSE OF TWO YEARS.  IN A STATEMENT HE HAS SAID THAT HE DOESN’T REMEMBER ANYTHING ABOUT THESE EVENTS, SAYING HE HAD SMOKED LACED MARIJUANA, AND THEN SURRENDERED HIS DRUGS IF THEY WERE MAKING HIM DO SUCH THINGS. HE WAS ORIGINALLY CHARGED IN TWO CASES, BUT THE OTHER CHARGES HAVE BEEN DISMISSED AS THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS HAD EXPIRED.

A WARROAD MAN ACCUSED OF SCATTERING NAILS ON AREA ROADS AND CAUSING DAMAGE TO PEOPLE’S VEHICLES HAS BEEN SENTENCED, AFTER PLEADING TO A LESSER CHARGE. TRAVIS THOMPSON WAS INITIALLY CHARGED WITH A FELONY, BUT PLEADED GUILTY TO A 4TH DEGREE MISDEMEANOR OF DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. POLICE SAY THEY HAD BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE THAT CASE OUT FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, AS THE NAILS HAD BEEN PLACED AT LEAST SEVEN SEPARATE TIMES FROM JANUARY 2023 TO APRIL 2024.

STUDENTS AND FAMILIES IN MINNESOTA ARE ENJOYING THEIR SECOND YEAR OF FREE SCHOOL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH, AND ALTHOUGH THE PROGRAM HAS PROVEN TO BE SLIGHTLY MORE EXPENSIVE THAN INITIAL ESTIMATES, IT SEEMS TO BE VIEWED IN A POSITIVE LIGHT. NORTH DAKOTA IS NOW LOOKING TO POSSIBLY FOLLOW SUIT, WITH TWO PROPOSALS TO MAKE THOSE MEALS FREE TO K-12 STUDENTS HAVING BEEN INTRODUCED.

THE NORTHWEST MINNESOTA FOUNDATION WILL BEGIN TAKING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS FEBRUARY 1. THE AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE A WIDE RANGE. LAST YEAR, THEY AWARDED 262 SCHOLARSHIPS THAT RANGED FROM $500-$4000.

A Celebration of Life for Terry “Ricky” Felts of Salol, MN will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025 at 5:00PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau, MN. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Terry passed away at the age of 62.
