The Buena Vista Ski area marks 75 years this Winter. Just 13 miles north of Bemidji, the Buena Vista Ski Area has been a winter haven for outdoor enthusiasts for 75 years. Opened on Christmas Day in 1949, this family-operated ski resort boasts a rich history, with artifacts from its diamond jubilee displayed in the chalet. Located on the Continental Divide, Buena Vista’s early days trace back to the late 1800s when settler John W. Speelman built the Summit Hotel, famously advertising that rainwater from its roof flowed either to the Hudson Bay or the Gulf of Mexico. Once a thriving village, the area is now celebrated as Beltrami County’s highest natural point of land, with the Dickinson family preserving its legacy as a beloved ski destination.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has released a midpoint review of its 10-year statewide deer management plan, highlighting accomplishments and ongoing challenges. The plan, in effect from 2018 to 2028, aims to manage white-tailed deer populations with eight goals, including improving habitat, reducing disease, and enhancing public engagement. Key achievements include revising deer population goals, expanding youth hunting opportunities, sampling over 70,000 deer for chronic wasting disease (CWD), and acquiring 28,000 acres of hunting land. However, challenges remain, such as reaching population targets in 75% of deer permit areas, increasing annual harvests to 200,000, and addressing the spread of CWD. Emerging concerns include wolf-deer dynamics, technological advances in hunting, and declining hunter participation. The DNR invites the public to review the assessment and provide input during a webinar on Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. More details and the review are available at mndnr.gov/deerplan.
