UNDER THE PLAN, FOND DU LAC WOULD START TRANSPLANTING ELK INTO NORTHERN CARLTON COUNTY AND SOUTHERN ST. LOUIS COUNTY IN 2025, AT FIRST WITH ANIMALS TAKEN FROM A WILD HERD IN KITTSON COUNTY. EVENTUALLY THE BAND CALLS FOR MOVING UP TO 150 ELK INTO THE AREA OVER 3-5 YEARS WITH AN EVENTUAL GOAL OF A SUSTAINABLE POPULATION OF ABOUT 300
THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE HAS RECEIVED AN ADDITIONAL $167 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING THROUGH THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN ACT TO FUND MINNESOTA’S ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM. CASS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICIALS SAY ONE PERSON HAS DIED AFTER BEING STRUCK BY GUNFIRE AT AN OUTDOOR HOUSE PARTY. AUTHORITIES SAY A DRIVE-BY SHOOTING HAPPENED AT A RESIDENCE IN CASS LAKE SHORTLY BEFORE 3 A.M. MONDAY. DEPUTIES ARRIVED TO FIND A 34-YEAR-OLD LOCAL MAN HAD BEEN HIT BY GUNFIRE. THE VICTIM WAS TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE TO THE CASS LAKE INDIAN SERVICES HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD. THE RAMSEY COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE WILL CONDUCT AN AUTOPSY. THE INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING.
