Percy Leavern Erickson was born on July 28th, 1938 to Elmer and Mable (Roseen) Erickson In Roseau, MN. Percy grew up on the family farm in Pencer MN where he worked with his dad to milk the cows, raise and harvest the crops, and tend to the many animals they raised. Percy attended the Pencer School and Malung School, graduating from Roseau High School. Percy passed away in the early morning on March 25th at Lifecare Manor in Roseau, Mn. He was 86 years old.

Percy married Sandra Johnson Dec 30th, 1956 At Pine Grove Church. Soon after they bought the family farm where they ran a dairy operation, raised beef, and worked the land and raised their 5 children.  They sold the cows in the late 70’s, at that time he went to work at Polaris in maintenace on second shift. Percy and Sandra along with their son Bert and his wife Debbie went back into dairy for several years. In the last years of his working career, he worked 13 years for Roseau County.

Percy and Sandra spent their retirement winters in Yuma Az where they eventually bought a place of their own. They enjoyed Yuma and the many snowbird friends they became so close to, especially Fran and Larry. The summers would include their close friends Randy and Arlys, enjoying happy hour out on the patio watching the hummingbirds and orioles.

Percy was a hunter. In his younger years if he wasn’t in the barn, he was out hunting and trapping. He sold hundreds of beaver pelts, as well as fox, coyotes and mink, to fur traders, to make extra money for his family. He raised prime hunting dogs that he sold to hunters all over the country.

Deer season was truly the highlight every year. Everyone came home for deer season and gathered at the farm. Over the years were many guests that spent the season at the Erickson farm. Friends and neighbors would stop at the barn the Friday night before opening Saturday to visit and have a drink to kick off the season.   There were many memories made with his best buddies, cousin David Trach, and friend Jack Steinhauer. “The 3 amigos”.

The Erickson farm was “home” to many. Percy and Sandra always had an extra place at the dinner table and place to rest your head. It was the neighborhood swimming hole, softball park, and barn dance venue. The radio played in the barn and sing-a-long ensued. Singing and dancing was a part of everyday life on the farm and still is today with the gatherings at “the barn” where dancing and singing will happen with participation from all.
