Rex Albert Welin, age 66, of Salol, MN, passed away on May 8, 2024 in Clarksville, TN as a result of a tragic accident while attempting to be a Good Samaritan.
He was born on November 24, 1957, in Roseau, MN, to Luverne and Lorraine Welin. He was the fourth of eight siblings. Rex met his wife, Laurie Ellenson, at a Warroad-Roseau hockey game in 1973 and they were married on October 15, 1977. They had two daughters, Dawn and Rebecca, and a son, Bryce. Laurie, Rex, and their children moved several times throughout the years, but always ended up back in Roseau County. Rex retired in 2021.
Rex loved spending time with his family, tinkering in his garage, traveling, 4-wheeling, and camping. He also enjoyed going to antique tractor and car shows with his brothers. Rex was a great friend to many and almost never went anywhere without finding someone to visit with. He often stopped by for coffee with cookies in hand. Rex never failed to make someone laugh, and he always had a joke for every occasion. He was a loving “Baba” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will cherish their memories with him forever.
Rex is survived by his wife of 46 years, Laurie Welin; daughters, Dawn (Trevor) Herring and Rebecca (Jonathon) Prevost; siblings: Vern Welin, Phyllis Vinesett, Dale Welin, Brent Welin, and Nancy Hammer; grandchildren: Alexis Welin, Chloe Prevost, Gage Herring, Carissa Prevost, and Kaitlynn Ernst; and great-grandchildren, Conner Welin and Ryder Williams. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Bryce Welin; siblings, Diane Larson and Mark Welin; and grandchild, Trinadi Herring.
A memorial service for Rex Welin will be held Tuesday, May 28th, 2024 at 10:00 am at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau with a visitation an hour prior. Internment will take place at Spruce Cemetery following the memorial service.
