Minnesota’s death toll from COVID-19 has climbed by 21, reaching 2,349 since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Of the 21 newly reported deaths Sunday, one patient was aged 30-34 years old from St. Louis County. There was also a person in their 50s from Hennepin County who died.
Of the dead since the first fatal case was reported in March, 1,645 were residents of long-term care facilities, including 12 of the 21 in Sunday’s report from the Minnesota Department of Health.
There were 1,684 positive tests reported, of which four were removed for a total of 1,680 confirmed cases – this is close to the highest ever positive cases in a single day. The MDH reported 32,806 diagnostic PCR tests and an additional 1,682 antigen tests for a total of 34,488 completed tests.
Those tests were from 26,616 people tested. As if often the case, patients are tested multiple times, so the more accurate reading for test positivity rate is based on the total number of people tested, which today is 4.87%.
The positivity rate for Saturday when total cases is divided by total tests is 6.19%. Health experts say positivity rates need to be below the 5% mark to control the spread of the virus.
