THE FIREARMS DEER SEASON OPENER IS SATURDAY, WITH COLDER TEMPS SETTLING IN. IT WAS WARMER THAN USUAL FOR THE YOUTH DEER SEASON, WHICH HAD AN AFFECT ON HARVEST NUMBERS. AN ESTIMATED 5,500 DEER WERE TAKEN DURING THE YOUTH HUNT, THAT WAS DOWN 35% FROM 2021. LOOKING AT ALL SEASONS TOGETHER SO FAR, A DEER HARVEST IS DOWN 9% FROM LAST YEAR, BUT HIGHER THAN A FIVE YEAR MEAN.
THE EAST GRAND FORKS FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS DISPATCHED TO TWO RURAL FIRES, WHICH HAS THEM REMINDING RESIDENTS TO USE EXTREME CAUTION WHILE BURNING DURING THE CURRENT DRY CONDITIONS. ONE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A BURN PILE THAT WAS LIT THREE DAYS AGO, BUT RE-IGNITED IN THE HIGH WINDS. IT DESTROYED TWO OUTBUILDINGS. THE OTHER FIRE’S CAUSE REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.
IF YOU’RE SOMEONE WHO ENJOYS BAKING FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON, THE GRAND FORKS HERALD HAS A WRITE UP ON TIPS YOU COULD USE TO TAKE SOME OF THE STRESS OUT OF THAT PROCESS.
ICE IS IN AT ROSEAU’S MEMORIAL ARENA, WITH HIGH SCHOOL AND YOUTH TEAMS UTILIZING THAT SHEET, BUT ALSO OPENING UP MORE SLOTS FOR OPEN SKATES AND OPEN HOCKEY. ALL THREE OF ROSEAU’S ARENAS ARE NOW BEING UTILIZED.
