A TRACKED VEHICLE WENT THROUGH THE ICE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON ON LAKE OF THE WOODS NEAR FLAG ISLAND, RESULTING IN THE DROWNING DEATH OF ONE MAN. IT WAS REPORTED SHORTLY AFTER 8 AM AND THE BODY WAS RECOVERED JUST AFTER 3 PM IN ABOUT 10 FEET OF WATER. AN IDENTITY HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.
TWO MEN HAD TO BE RESCUED FROM UPPER RED LAKE AFTER THEIR ATV WENT THROUGH THE ICE. EMERGENCY CREWS WERE NOT NEEDED AS THEY WERE ASSISTED BY PEOPLE FROM A NEARBY RESORT. IT’S THE FOURTH RESCUE OF STRANDED FISHERMEN ON UPPER RED SINCE MID-DECEMBER.
TWO BROTHERS FROM CROOKSTON HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT MURDER ALONG WITH NUMEROUS DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGES. 54 YEAR OLD JUAN DELEON AND 52-YEAR OLD ABELARDO DELEON ALLEGEDLY HAD A CONSPIRACY TO MURDER ANOTHER PERSON WHO KNEW TOO MUCH ABOUT THEIR DRUG BUSINESS. POLICE ARE ALSO LOOKING INTO THE POSSIBILITY THAT THEY ARE CONNECTED TO THE DISAPPEARANCE OF A STEPSON FRANK RAMIREZ JR IN 2020.
AN OWNER OF A STORE IN ST CLOUD THAT SELLS FLAGS AND ACCESSORIES SAYS THAT PEOPLE ARE SWARMING TO BUY CURRENT VERSIONS OF THE STATE FLAG. FOR SOME THAT WILL BE A KEEPSAKE, FOR OTHERS IT’S A FORM OF PROTEST AGAINST THE FLAG’S RE-DESIGN. HE’S CURRENTLY SOLD OUT, IS EXPECTING MORE THE WEEK OF JANUARY 8TH, BUT ALREADY HAS A CUSTOMER WAITING LIST OF ABOUT 50 CUSTOMERS.

THEY IN PART DO SO BY RETAINING OWNERSHIP OF THE LAND ON WHICH THE HOUSE IS LOCATED. JIM KUKOWSKI OF STRATHCONA WAS ELECTED TO SERVE ON THE AMERICAN SOYBEAN ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AT THEIR DECEMBER BOARD MEETING IN ST LOUIS. HE HAS FARMED FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS IN ROSEAU COUNTY AND HAS BEEN A DIRECTOR WITH THE MINNESOTA SOYBEAN GROWERS ASSOCIATION SINCE 2008.
Dorothy Brewster passed away on December 20, 2023 surrounded by her family. Services will be held later this spring at Riverside Cemetery.
