WITH THE MINNESOTA DEER HARVEST DOWN ON OPENING WEEKEND FROM LAST YEAR, AND NOW MAJOR SNOW ACROSS MUCH OF THE STATE, THEY ARE PREDICTING THIS YEAR’S HARVEST COULD BE THE LOWEST IN OVER 40 YEARS. THE HARVEST LAST WEEKEND WAS DOWN 23% FROM LAST YEAR, BUT WAS ONLY DOWN 9% OVER A LONGER AVERAGE.

DISTRICT 1 MINNESOTA STATE SENATOR MARK JOHNSON (EAST GRAND FORKS) WAS NAMED THE SENATE MINORITY LEADER. HE MENTIONED PARENT AND STUDENT SUCCESS, PUBLIC SAFETY, AND GETTING BUDGET SURPLUS DOLLARS BACK INTO THE HANDS OF MINNESOTANS AS PRIORITIES.

A REMINDER THAT ALL SECOND HALF TAXES ON FARM CLASSIFICATIONS AND MOBILE HOMES ARE DUE NOVEMBER 15. PAYMENTS CAN NOW BE MADE ONLINE. THE COURTHOUSE IS CLOSED NOVEMBER 11 FOR VETERANS DAY.

Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan announced today a new grant program to support Minnesotans purchasing their first farm. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will manage the grant program and offer dollar-for-dollar matching up to $15,000 for qualified small farmers to purchase farmland. Farmers must be Minnesota residents who will earn less than $250,000 annually in gross agricultural sales and plan on providing the majority of the day-to-day physical labor on the farm for at least five years. MDA’s Rural Finance Authority (RFA) will award this funding using a first-come, first-served application process that will open at 9 a.m. on January 4.

A STUDY SHOWS THAT US MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT TOBACCO USE IS DOWN NEARLY A THIRD SINCE 2020. THE SURVEY SHOWS THAT 3.08 MILLION, OR 11%, STUDENTS REPORTED USE WITHIN THE LAST 30 DAYS, THAT’S DOWN FROM 4.47 MILLION IN 2020. IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT E-CIGARETTES ARE THE MOST HIGHLY USED, FOLLOWED BY CIGARS, THEN CIGARETTES.
