WITH RECENT RAINS, THE MINNESOTA DNR IS LIFTING BURNING RESTRICTIONS IN 19 COUNTIES, AND LESSER RESTRICTIONS WILL REMAIN IN PLACE IN 16 OTHERS. IN THE EASTERN HALF OF ROSEAU COUNTY, ALL OF LAKE OF THE WOODS, KOOCHICHING AND BELTRAMI COUNTIES CLASS III RESTRICTIONS WILL REMAIN IN PLACE, MEANING NO CAMPFIRES ARE ALLOWED FOR DISPERSED AND BACKWOODS CAMPING. ALL FIRES MUST BE IN AN ESTABLISHED FIRE RING ASSOCIATED WITH A HOME, CABIN, CAMPGROUND, OR RESORT.

WITH ACTING SENATE MAJORITY LEADER PAUL GAZELKA STEPPING DOWN AS HE MULLS A RUN FOR GOVERNOR, SENATOR MARK JOHNSON OF EAST GRAND FORKS HAS BEEN SELECTED AS ACTING SENATE MAJORITY LEADER.

ANOTHER SIGN OF DIFFICULT DECISIONS THAT WILL BE FACED BY SCHOOLS THIS YEAR, CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL HAS DECIDED TO NOT HOST A HOMECOMING DANCE AS PART OF THEIR WEEK LONG FESTIVITIES. THEY SAY THAT THE POTENTIAL SPREAD OF COVID-19 IS THE LEADING FACTOR SINCE THE DANCE WOULD BE IN AN ENCLOSED SPACE. THE DECISION IS NOT SET IN STONE, AND SHOULD BE FINALIZED IN THE COMING DAYS.

Minnesota archery deer season starts Sept. 18 and firearms deer season Nov. 6. But firearms hunters who want a Minnesota doe permit in deer units where they are limited need to buy their licenses by Thursday, Sept. 9.

Hunters who purchase their licenses by Sept. 9 are automatically entered into the lottery for the deer permit area or special hunt area they declare. No application is needed to take antlerless deer in permit areas with either sex, two-deer limit, three-deer limit or five-deer limit designations.

THE MAJORITY OF OUR AREA HAS A THREE DEER LIMIT, BUT AREA 111, TO OUR SOUTH IS A ONE-DEER LIMIT: BUCKS ONLY UNIT.

MAJOR TAXIWAY RECONSTRUCTION IS COMING TO THE DULUTH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, AND THEY RECEIVED THEIR FIRST ROUND OF FUNDING IN TEH FORM OF A $7.3 MILLION FEDERAL GRANT. THE TOTAL IMPROVMENTS ARE EXPECTED TO HAPPEN OVER THE NEXT FIVE TO TEN YEARS.

A FIRST DEGREEE MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE IS BEING ADDED TO THE CHARGES AGAINST FORMER OFFICER KIMBERLY POTTER, WHO SHOT DAUNTE WRIGHT DURING A TRAFFIC STOP IN APRIL, SAYING SHE MISTOOK HER TASER FOR HER GUN. THE SECOND DEGREE CHARGE CARRIES A POSSIBLE SENTENCE OF 3-5 YEARS, WHILE FIRST DEGREE CAN BE SIX TO EIGHT AND HALF YEARS.
