SMALLER BIRDS AND HIGHER PRICES ARE THE TALK IN THE TURKEY WORLD AHEAD OF THANKSGIVING. THAT IS DUE TO AVIAN INFLUENZA WHICH HAS LED TO MORE THAN 46 MILLION BIRDS ACROSS 40 STATES BEING KILLED DUE TO THE DISEASE. IN SEPTEMBER, A RETAIL PRICE FOR FRESH BONELESS, SKINLESS TURKEY BREAST REACHED A RECORD HIGH OF $6.70 PER POUND, THAT WAS 112% HIGHER THAN THE SAME TIME LAST YEAR. DESPITE ALL OF THIS, THEY DO NOT EXPECT THERE TO BE A TURKEY SHORTAGE, AND AGAIN THEY REITERATE THAT THE DISEASE POSES NO DANGER TO HUMAN CONSUMPTION.
Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan announced today a new grant program to support Minnesotans purchasing their first farm. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will manage the grant program and offer dollar-for-dollar matching up to $15,000 for qualified small farmers to purchase farmland. Farmers must be Minnesota residents who will earn less than $250,000 annually in gross agricultural sales and plan on providing the majority of the day-to-day physical labor on the farm for at least five years. MDA’s Rural Finance Authority (RFA) will award this funding using a first-come, first-served application process that will open at 9 a.m. on January 4

COMPARED TO THE LAST MID-TERM ELECTION, MINNESOTA SAW A TURNOUT THAT WAS DOWN 4%, WHILE THERE WAS A 6% NATIONWIDE DOWNTURN. AFTER CONSECUTIVE ELECTION CYCLES OF HAVING THE HIGHEST TURNOUT IN THE COUNTRY, MAINE AND OREGON HAD HIGHER THAN MINNESOTA THIS CYCLE.

VISITATION WILL BE THURSDAY (5-7 PM) AT HELGESON FUNERAL HOME IN ROSEAU, WITH A 7:00 PRAYER SERVICE, AND WILL ALSO BE ONE HOUR PRIOR ON FRIDAY. INTERMENT WILL TAKE PLACE AT BADGER CITY CEMETERY.
