A WARROAD POLICE OFFICER WAS ARRESTED MONDAY, AND APPEARED IN COURT YESTERDAY, ON CHARGES OF KIDNAPPING, THIRD-DEGREE SEXUAL CONDUCT, AND STALKING. ON THE FORCE SINCE 2016, 29- YEAR OLD JOSHUA DEMMERLY ALLEGEDLY USED HIS POSITION OF POWER TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A TEENAGER, INCLUDING SEXUALLY ASSAULTING THE VICTIM MORE THAN 10 TIMES. THE MAXIMUM PUNISHMENT FOR THE SEXUAL MISCONDUCT CHARGE IS 15 YEARS IN PRISON, THE STALKING CHARGE HOLDS UP TO A 10 YEAR PENALTY, AND KIDNAPPING A 3 YEAR MAXIMUM. A PLEA IS EXPECTED TO BE ENTERED APRIL 23.

MINNESOTA LAW STATES THAT A PERSON MAY NOT OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE WHILE READING OR SENDING TEXT MESSAGES OR EMAILS, OR ACCESSING THE WEB WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION OR A PART OF TRAFFIC. THIS INCLUDES WHEN STOPPED AT SIGNALS. ACCORDING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY, 1 IN 5 CRASHES CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO DISTRACTED DRIVING.
THE WAUBUN HIGH SCHOOL WAS PUT ON LOCKDOWN TUESDAY MORNING AFTER LAW ENFORCEMENT RECEIVED A REPORT OF A PERSON CARRYING A FIREARM IN THE AREA. THE MAHNOMEN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, ALONG WITH OTHER AGENCIES, RESPONDED TO THE CALL, BUT FOUND NO EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE INITIAL THREAT. THEY DID STATION ADDITIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AT THE SCHOOL FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY.
THE FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (FEMA) ANNOUNCED $5.9 MILLION DOLLARS IN FEDERAL FUNDING TO MINNKOTA POWER COMPANY FOR REPAIRS TO THE ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IN NORTHWEST MINNESOTA. THAT IS RELATED TO DAMAGE OCCURRED DURING SEVERE STORMS, TORNADOES, AND FLOODING BETWEEN JUNE 15 AND JULY 12 OF 2018.
TWO PEOPLE HAVE DIED IN A FIRE JUST NORTH OF MCGREGOR, MINNESOTA. AN 80-YEAR OLD MALE AND 69-YEAR OLD FEMALE WERE FOUND INSIDE THE HOME. THAT FIRE OCCURRED SUNDAY NIGHT JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
A MAN IN DULUTH HAS SURVIVED A GUN SHOT WOUND TO FACE. THE INCIDENT HAPPENED TUESDAY NEAR SECOND AVENUE WEST AND SUPERIOR STREET. OFFICERS RESPONDED TO REPORTS OF A SINGLE GUNSHOT AT 11:20 PM ON TUESDAY, AND FOUND THE VICTIM RESPONSIVE. A SUSPECT WAS NOT IN CUSTODY, BUT THE VICTIM AND SUSPECT KNOW EACH OTHER, AND POLICE DO NOT BELIEVE THERE IS ANY ADDITIONAL THREAT TO THE PUBLIC.
