The Grand Forks Herald reported this week that on New Year’s Eve morning, the Zippel Bay area of Lake of the Woods lived up to its reputation for massive northern pike when 10-year-old Leah Saffert and her father, Jamie, encountered an unexpectedly colossal fish. Staying at their family ice shack, the Safferts decided to kick off the last day of the year by setting tip-ups for northern pike, hoping to catch a sizable one for Leah. Using sucker minnows in 13 feet of water, they got their first flag around 9:30 a.m., leading to Leah’s intense battle with a remarkably heavy and pale-colored pike, creating a memorable fishing experience.

Grant opportunities for Minnesota farmers to construct winter greenhouses and boost fresh produce cultivation are now available, courtesy of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s AGREETT program. In collaboration with the University of Minnesota Extension’s Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP), the initiative seeks specialty crop farmers in each of its five regions to join forces on passive solar greenhouse research and education. With an emphasis on the innovative farm-scale deep winter greenhouse design, participants can extend their growing season, generating revenue during the off-season while minimizing reliance on fossil fuel heating. RSDP plans to contribute $25,000 towards the expected $48,000 to $58,000 cost for building a prototype greenhouse, with participants agreeing to share access for research projects and public engagement for three years. Proposals for this transformative opportunity in local food production are due by February 14, 2024, offering a chance for Minnesota farmers to revolutionize the state’s agricultural landscape. For more information on deep winter greenhouses and the request for applications, visit: z.umn.edu/deepwintergreenhouse
More than 40% of Minnesota homes have elevated radon levels, a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that poses a significant risk of lung cancer, particularly in non-smokers. The Minnesota Department of Health, alongside various public health organizations, is urging homeowners and renters to test their residences for radon during National Radon Action Month in January, as only about 1-2% of homes in the state are tested annually, with notable disparities in testing rates across different communities. Testing kits are readily available, and addressing high radon levels typically involves installing a ventilating pipe and fan to mitigate the risk. Residents are encouraged to call 1-800-798-9050 for more information.
