A WET SPRING IN MINNESOTA HAS LEFT FARMERS STATEWIDE WITH UN-PLANTED ACRES OF BARLEY, CANOLA, DRY EDIBLE BEANS, OATS, SUNFLOWERS AND OTHER SPRING WHEAT. A JUNE PLANTING REPORT ALSO SHOWED THAT MINNESOTA FARMERS MISSED PLANTING AN ESTIMATED 8 MILLION ACRE OF SOYBEANS, AND ONLY PLANTED 7.5 MILLION. CORN ACREAGE HOWEVER, INCREASED FROM 7.8 MILLION TO 8.3 MILLION. IN NEIGHBORING NORTH DAKOTA, SOME COUNTIES SAW FARMERS LEFT WITH 35-40% OF ACRES NOT PLANTED.
A NEW STATE PROGRAM WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN FARMING TO ACQUIRE LAND WITH $500,000 AVAILABLE TO ASSIST IN DOWN PAYMENTS. IT IS AIMED TOWARDS SMALL SCALE FARMERS, AND CAN ASSIST WITH UP TO $15,000 FOR ONE PERSON.

THE GRAND FORKS AND EAST GRAND FORKS CITY COUNCIL’S MET JOINTLY, IN PART TO DISCUSS THE POTENTIAL FOR ANOTHER BRIDGE CONNECTING THE TWO CITIES. BOTH AGREE THAT A BRIDGE IS NEEDED, BUT A LOCATION REMAINS UP IN THE AIR. A BRIDGE CONNECTING TO 32ND AVENUE IN GRAND FORKS SEEMS TO BE THE PREFERRED DECISION, BUT GRAND FORKS LEADERS HAVE ISSUES WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD THAT WILL RUN THROUGH AND SCHOOL ZONES.
THE GRAND FORKS HERALD WEBSITE FEATURES A STORY ON THE UNIQUE PROBLEMS OF FINDING BABY FORMULA FOR RURAL FAMILIES ON WIC. FINDING SOME FORMULAS REMAINS DIFFICULT FOR THOSE WITH LIMITED SHOPPING OPTIONS, THEN ADD IN WIC LIMITATIONS, SMALLER STORES NOT ACCEPTING WIC, ADDITIONAL GAS COST OF TRAVELING TO FIND FORMULA, WHICH EVEN THEN CAN BE A WILD GUESS AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THEY HAVE ANY. WIC BENEFITS ALSO CAN ONLY BE USED IN THE STATE IN WHICH YOU RESIDE, FOR LIVING NEAR A BORDER DOESN’T HELP, AND PURCHASES HAVE TO BE DONE IN PERSON.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR JOSLYN K. MOREY OF ROSEAU WILL BE HELD THIS SATURDAY (2 PM) AT HELGESON FUNERAL HOME IN ROSEAU. VISITATION WILL BE HELD ONE HOUR PRIOR. INTERMENT WILL BE AT MOOSE RIVER TOWNSHIP CEMETERY IN WANNASKA. JOSLYN MOREY WAS 77.
