THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD, THIS WEEK, APPROVED AN AUGUST 10TH PUBLIC HEARING ON A PROPOSED LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX. PROCEEDS CAN BE USED FOR TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS. IT’S ESTIMATED THE HALF-CENT SALES TAX WOULD GENERATE BETWEEN FIVE HUNDRED AND NINE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS ANNUALLY.
THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD HAS APPROVED THE HIRE OF HALEY THRAMER AS AN OFFICE SUPPORT SPECIALIST IN SOCIAL SERVICES.
THE CITY OF ROSEAU MAY GET AN ADDITIONAL 141 THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM MINNESOTA HOUSING FOR THE Eleven01 APARTMENT PROJECT; PLUS A LOW INTEREST LOAN FROM THE NORTHWEST MINNESOTA MULTI-COUNTY HOUSING AND REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY. CONSTRUCTION ON THAT 37 UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING IS SCHEDULED TO START THIS SUMMER.
THE CITY OF ROSEAU WILL ACQUIRE A HOUSE AT 303 CENTER STREET FOR TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS, WITH THE INTENTION OF DEMOLISHING IT TO CREATE A POTENTIAL BUILDING LOT. THAT HOUSE IS ONE OF THE OLDEST STRUCTURES IN THE CITY.

FRAZEE, DETROIT LAKES, WOLF LAKE AND VERGAS FIREFIGHTERS BATTLED A LARGE BLAZE FOR NEARLY 6 HOURS AT A LARGE HOG CONTAINMENT BUILDING OUTSIDE OF FRAZEE ON FRIDAY NIGHT, JULY 9. ALL FARM PERSONNEL WERE EVACUATED FROM THE BUILDING, BUT UP TO 7,500 HOGS WERE KILLED DUE TO FIRE AND SMOKE INHALATION.
AN AMMONIA LEAK AT THE DULUTH CURLING CLUB PROMPTED AN EVACUATION OF THE DULUTH ENTERTAINMENT CONVENTION CENTER LAST EVENING. HAZMAT CREWS WERE ON THE SCENE EVALUATING THE ORIGIN OF THE LEAK AND INVESTIGATING.
THE MINNESOTA POLLUTION CONTROL AGENCY SAYS IT’S INVESTIGATING A SPILL OF DRILLING FLUID INTO THE WILLOW RIVER IN AITKIN COUNTY LAST WEEK DURING CONSTRUCTION ON THE ENBRIDGE LINE 3 OIL PIPELINE. THE AGENCY SAYS ABOUT 80 TO 100 GALLONS OF DRILLING FLUID, OR MUD, WERE INADVERTENTLY RELEASED ON JULY 6 AT A CONSTRUCTION SITE. ENBRIDGE SPOKESPERSON JULI KELLNER TELLS MINNESOTA PUBLIC RADIO NEWS THAT THE COMPANY IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN THE DRILLING OPERATION, AND CREWS BEGAN CONTAINMENT AND CLEANUP. ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS OPPOSED TO THE LINE 3 PROJECT CRITICIZED THE RELEASE. THEY SAY THE FINE PARTICLES IN DRILLING MUD COULD IMPACT AQUATIC LIFE.
