A BILLBOARD ALONG US HIGHWAY 53 IN ST LOUIS COUNTY IS SPARKING DEBATE ON WOLVES IN MINNESOTA. THE BILLBOARD FEATURES A PICTURE OF A FAWN WITH ONE SIMPLE STATEMENT “WOLVES DEVOUR 54,000 FAWNS A YEAR IN MINNESOTA.” IT WAS PAID FOR BY THE STURGEON RIVER CHAPTER OF THE MINNESOTA DEER HUNTERS ASSOCIATION. THEY SAY IT’S MEANT TO PROMOTE WOLF MANAGEMENT AND STATE-SANCTION WOLF HUNTING SEASONS, WHICH RIGHT NOW IS A MOOT POINT, AS THEY ARE PROTECTED BY THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT. RESEARCHES SAY THAT THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC DATA ON JUST HOW MANY FAWNS ARE KILLED BY WOLVES, IT COULD BE HIGHER, IT COULD BE LOWER, BUT CLAIMING SPECIFICS WITHOUT PROOF IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA.

A DEPUTY THEN INITIATED A TRAFFIC STOP AND THE VAN PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT OF THE GOSH DAM PLACE, THE POPULAR EATERY ON LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH. IT TURNS OUT THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN BY A MOTHER TRYING TO GET HER DAUGHTER TO A HOSPITAL AS SHE WAS IN LABOR. INSTEAD, THE BABY WAS BORN IN THE PARKING LOT.
