THOMAS HUGHES OF HALLOCK DIED THIS WEEK AT AGE 94. THE FORMER BADGER AND STRATHCONA RESIDENT WAS THE OWNER OF THE HUGHES FUNERAL HOME IN HALLOCK FROM 1968 TO 1992.
A STAGE TWO DETOUR ON HIGHWAY 172 , NORTH OF BAUDETTE, STARTS MONDAY AS MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION CREWS COMPLETE A BOX CULVERT INSTALLATION AND ROAD RE-SURFACING PROJECT. THREE DAYS OF DETOURS WILL USE HIGHWAY ELEVEN AND LAKE OF THE WOODS COUNTY ROADS TWO AND EIGHT. THE WORK ON HIGHWAY 172 WILL THEN FINISH USING PILOT CAR AND FLAGGER OPERATIONS.
MAIL BALLOTS FOR THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION WILL BE SENT BY THE ROSEAU COUNTY AUDITOR’S OFFICE OCTOBER 5TH, TO VOTERS IN 32 TOWNSHIPS, ALL THE UNORGANIZED TOWNSHIPS, AND THE CITIES OF BADGER, ROOSEVELT AND STRATHCONA. ABSENTEE BALLOTS WERE IN THE MAIL THIS WEEK FOR “AB” VOTERS IN THE CITIES OF ROSEAU, WARROAD AND GREENBUSH AND MORANVILLE TOWNSHIP. MOST OF ROSEAU COUNTY WILL VOTE BY MAIL IN 2020, DUE IN PART TO THE PANDEMIC.
THE ROSEAU SCHOOL HAS BEEN OPERATING IN A HYBRID MODE FOR GRADES SEVEN THROUGH TWELVE THIS WEEK AND LAST, AND WILL REMAIN HYBRID AT LEAST THROUGH OCTOBER 2ND. ROSEAU SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT TOM JEROME. HYBRID IN ROSEAU MEANS JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS ARE IN SCHOOL TWO DAYS A WEEK, AND LEARNING FROM HOME TWO OTHER DAYS.
THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD, THIS WEEK, APPROVED THEIR PRELIMINARY LEVY AND BUDGET FOR 2021. THE PROPOSED LEVY WOULD BE FIFTEEN PERCENT HIGHER THAN THE CURRENT YEAR, BUT WOULD HAVE MINIMAL IMPACT ON PROPERTY OWNERS DUE TO AN EXPANDED TAX BASE IN THE COUNTY. THE FINAL LEVY AND BUDGET MUST BE APPROVED BY THE END OF DECEMBER.
THE CITY OF ROSEAU APPROVED THEIR LEVY AND BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR EARLIER THIS MONTH. THE CITY’S TAX LEVY REMAINS UNCHANGED, BUT THE BUDGET SHOWS A PROJECTED ONE-POINT-FIVE MILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT. ROSEAU MAYOR JEFF PELOWSKI.

THAT’S BASED ON THINGS LIKE THE RATE OF DEPRESSION, TO THE RATE OF INCOME GROWTH. NORTH DAKOTA IS 7TH HAPPIEST. THE MOST UNHAPPY STATES, ACCORDING TO THE WEBSITE, ARE WEST VIRGINIA, ARKANSAS AND OKLAHOMA.
THE ROSEAU SCHOOL BOARD, THIS WEEK, APPROVED THE HIRES OF PARAPROFESSIONALS TAWNI WENSLOFF, SIMONE ERICKSON, KAREN LOPEZ RIVERA, SAYLI LOPEZ CARRERA AND JOY SISLER. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS STILL ADVERTISING FOR A FULLTIME CUSTODIAN; AND MAY ADD SOME PART-TIME COVID CLEANING HELP.
MINNESOTA D.N.R. FORESTRY SAYS THE RIVER FOREST ROAD IS CLOSED DURING THE DAY THIS WEEK FOR RIGHT-OF-WAY CLEARINGS. THERE IS A DETOUR USING THE PALSBURG AND SNOWS ROADS.
THE ROSEAU COUNTY MUSEUM HAS BEEN CLOSED SINCE MARCH WHEN THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC HIT MINNESOTA. MUSEUM CURATOR BRITT DAHL SAYS SHE’S HOPING TO RE-OPEN IN MID-OCTOBER, AND UNVEIL A TRAVELING SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT. “THE WAY WE WORKED” EXHIBIT WILL BE AT THE ROSEAU MUSEUM THROUGH MARCH OF NEXT YEAR.
THE ROSEAU CITY COUNCIL, THIS MONTH, ACCEPTED A FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR DONATION FROM NANCY AND JIM LUDWIG FOR THE CITY PARK BOARD.
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE BICYCLE ALLIANCE OF MINNESOTA WERE IN ROSEAU LAST WEEK, ENCOURAGING A CITY COMMITTEE TO PURSUE “BIKE FRIENDLY” STATUS. NATALIE GILLE OF BEMIDJI, WITH THE BICYCLE ALLIANCE, SAID THERE ARE LOW-COST STEPS ROSEAU COULD TAKE TO IMPROVE BIKING SAFETY IN THE CITY.
